The Importance of Healthy Foods at School
At our school, we want every child to feel happy, focused, and full of energy throughout the day. One of the most important ways we can support this is by making healthy food choices at school.
Why healthy food matters
Food is fuel for our bodies and our brains. When children eat balanced meals and snacks, they are more likely to:
- Stay focused during lessons
- Have more energy for learning and play
- Improve concentration and memory
- Feel positive and ready to take part in activities
On the other hand, too many sugary snacks or drinks can lead to tiredness, lack of focus, and energy “highs and lows” during the school day.
Healthy choices for KS1 and KS2 children
We encourage children to bring or choose foods that include a good balance of:
- Fruit and vegetables (fresh, chopped, or dried with no added sugar)
- Wholegrain foods such as wholemeal bread, pasta, or rice
- Protein sources like eggs, cheese, beans, chicken, or fish
- Healthy snacks such as yoghurt, nuts (if allowed in school policy), or seed bars
- Water as the main drink
A colourful lunchbox is often a healthy lunchbox!
Healthy packed lunches
For children bringing packed lunches, a simple guide is:
- One portion of protein
- One portion of carbohydrates
- At least one portion of fruit and/or vegetables
- A dairy item (such as cheese or yoghurt)
- Water to drink
Even small changes, like swapping a chocolate bar for a piece of fruit a few days a week, can make a big difference.
KS1 & KS2 understanding
Younger children in KS1 are learning what different foods do for their bodies, such as “fruit helps us stay healthy” or “milk helps our bones grow strong.” In KS2, children begin to understand more about balanced diets, nutrients, and how food affects long-term health and wellbeing.
Working together with families
We know that healthy habits work best when school and home work together. We encourage families to talk about food choices and involve children in preparing their lunchboxes where possible. This helps them understand what a balanced diet looks like in real life.
A final message
Healthy eating is not about being perfect it is about making good choices most of the time. By helping children understand the importance of healthy foods, we are supporting them to learn better, feel better, and grow stronger every day at school.
